RUNNING AND TAG GAMES
Dragon Tag
Age: 6 and up Group Size: 10 to 100 Space: Wide open space safe for running in Supplies: Bandanas or strips of cloth, about one per every 5-8 people
Directions Divide the group into dragons. With younger children the dragons should be made up of 4-6 people, with older children or adults the dragons can get as large as 12-14 people. The more dragons the more fun. To form a dragon, the people making that dragon line up single file, holding unto the waist or shoulders of the person in front of them. The last person of each dragon has a tail- a bandana tucked into a back pocket or through a belt loop so it can easily be pulled out. The goal of the game is for the person forming the head of each dragon to grab the tail off another dragon. If playing with a large group, start with a number of small dragons, as one dragon steals the tail off another dragon those two become one much larger dragon. If playing with long dragons, make sure that the people on the end will not be whipped around and hurt.
Elbow Tag
Age: 8 and up Group Size: 15 to 100 Space: Wide open space safe for running in Supplies: none
Directions Have everyone pair up, with partners linking arms. Have the pairs spread out in the playing area where they are to remain. Separate one pair into a chaser and a runner (if playing with a group larger than 30 people, have two or more sets of chasers and runners). The runner runs while the chaser chases the runner (if playing with more than one sets of runner/chaser each chaser is only to chase one specific runner). The chaser is trying to tag the runner. If this happens, the roles are reversed and the runner becomes the chaser and the chaser the runner. The runner however may link arms with anyone standing still in a pair. When this happens the person standing on the other side of the pairing the runner latches onto becomes the new runner. So, if Lisa and Dave are a pair and Leondra is chasing Mike and Mike links up to Dave, then Lisa becomes the new runner being chased by Leondra.
Rocks, Paper, Scissors Tag>
Age: 7 and up Group Size: 10 or more Space: Wide open space safe for running Supplies: 4 pylons (optional) Directions This is the traditional game of Rock, Paper, and Scissors with a twist. Divide the group into two teams of approximately equal number. On either end of the playing field establish a line running the width of the field that will mark each team’s home territory. As each team to decide among themselves which they will be-rocks, (closed fists), paper (flat hand) or scissors (index and middle fingers extended to make scissor). Once each group has decided, each group walks to the center of the field until they are about 4 feet apart, each team standing shoulder to shoulder. On the count to three each team holds out their hands with their chosen rock, paper, or scissors. The team that wins, chases the other team back to their home line, anyone who is tagged joins the winning team. Rocks beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rocks. For example, Team A chooses paper and Team B chooses scissors. The two teams face off. Because scissors can cut paper Team B “wins” and chases Team A back to Team A’s home line. Any members of Team A that were tagged now become members of Team B. The game continues until everyone is on one team.
